How School Counselors Help Students at Lumen Scholar Institute

Our School Counseling Center is Here for You

What does our school guidance counselor do?

The services provided by school counselors make a significant positive impact on the physical, mental, and educational wellbeing of the students who engage with counselors for support. While working with Lumen’s counselor provides students with numerous intangible benefits, the following are a few concrete examples of how our school counselor helps students every day.

  • Fulfilling Graduation Requirements

There is no one path to graduation and each student will chart their own educational journey. Our school guidance counselor is there to help guide that journey and ensure each and every student fulfills all requirements for graduation on or before schedule.

  • College & Career Prep

It’s never too early to start planning for college or your future career. Our counselor helps students find SAT and ACT testing resources, scholarships, information on colleges and university applications, post-graduation career opportunities, and more.

  • Student Mental Health Management

We want every student to thrive both academically and emotionally, and mental health and wellness are a big part of your child’s happiness and success. Our professional counselor is trained to provide mental health support and can provide access to outside resources to ensure your child’s mental health needs are met.

  • Crisis Intervention & Stabilization

If needed, our counselor can recommend resources for crisis intervention and stabilization services that provide short-term intensive mental health care for students who are experiencing an acute mental health crisis.

Guidance

When and how should I seek help for my child?

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if it’s “just a phase” or if your child needs to seek help and support. If you’re questioning whether your child needs additional help, please reach out to our school guidance counselor.

General Concerns About Your Child Expand

If you have general concerns about the behavioral, emotional, or cognitive wellbeing of your child, please don’t hesitate to contact our school counseling center. Together, we can address any concerns head-on.

Changes in Your Child’s Mood or Performance Expand

If you or your child’s teachers have noticed changes in your child’s mood or performance in school or afterschool activities, it’s important to address these issues before they escalate any further.

Unexplained Absences or Decreased Interest Expand

If your child is exhibiting a decreased interest in school or other activities, has recent unexplained absences, or seems “checked out” at home, it might be time to talk to the school counselor to get to the root of the problem and get them back on track.
